Paul Everett ParkerOctober 23, 1935 ~ July 2, 2016 (age 80)
Ruffin, NC - It is with profound sorrow we announce the death of Mr. Paul Everett Parker, who died Saturday, July 2, 2016 in the Annie Penn Memorial Hospital, Reidsville, NC.
Born on October 23, 1935 in Jenkins Bridge, VA, Paul was the son of Edward Lee and Alma Logan Parker.
After graduating from high school, he earned an associate's degree in the mechanical technology from Erie County Technical Institute of Buffalo NY. Paul served in the military during Korean Conflict. After the military, he returned to school to earn a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from North Carolina A & T University in Greensboro, NC and a master's degree from the state University of New York at Buffalo.
He married Annie Withers in 1961. They moved to Niagara Fall NY where Paul went to work for Bell Aerosystems. He and Annie had two sons - Paul Jr. and Kenneth - while in Niagara Falls NY. In 1967, he and his family moved back to Greensboro where he joined the faculty of North Carolina A & T University as an assistant professor of mechanical engineering. In the subsequent years, Paul held several roles including head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and assistant to the dean.
In 1973, he left NC A & T to pursue his Ph.D. at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign ( U of I ). At the same time, he served as assistant dean and director of minority engineering programs.
Paul retired from the U of I in 2007. He and Annie moved to Ruffin, NC in 2010.
Paul was a sports fan and an avid bowler. He bowled in several local bowling leagues and participated for 35 years in the annual United States Bowling Congress tournament.
Paul is survived by his wife, Annie, of Ruffin, NC; son, Paul Jr., of Sunnyvale, CA; and his sister, Alice Knight, of New York, NY. He was preceded in death by his parents, his stepmother, a younger sister, and a son, Kenneth.
